Behind every woodworker is probably a tired woman who puts up with all of our bullshit. 😂

The loud noises.
The sawdust that somehow follows us everywhere.
The frustration.
The swear words coming from the shop.
The “I’ll be done in 20 minutes” that actually means two more hours.
And the complete lack of attention because there’s one tiny detail on a project that we can’t stop obsessing over.

In my case, that woman is Michelle.

My best friend. The best mom. My biggest supporter. And the person who has believed in me—and in A Cut Above Custom Woodwork—from the very beginning.

She’s been there through the ideas that worked and the ones that absolutely didn’t. The long nights, the stressful deadlines, the expensive mistakes, the giant projects I probably had no business saying yes to, and every crazy idea that started with, “Okay, hear me out…”

She’s celebrated the wins with me and reminded me why I started when things weren’t going the way I wanted.

What people see is the finished table. The epoxy pour. The new project. The business growing.

What they don’t always see is the person behind the scenes who makes it possible for me to keep chasing all of it.

“What color stain do you use?”

IF WE DO- Natural. Every. Single. Time.

In fact, we have never once used a colored stain on any of our hardwood products.

Why?

Because… what’s the point?

If you ask us to stain your project a different color?

We will 100% of the time say, “No” and we will sleep just fine with the fan on, losing your project.

If you want dark wood, we’ll go to @stellasawmill and find you beautiful dark hardwood.

If you want lighter tones, we’ll go back to Stella Sawmill and choose a species that naturally gives you that look.

But taking a gorgeous piece of hardwood and covering its natural character with colored stain?

Not our style.

The tree already did the hard part.

Our job is to make sure you can see it.

We will never change our standard.

The hardest part of a project like this isn’t always the part people would expect.

When you have a massive live-edge slab like this one, with absolutely ZERO straight reference points—the first challenge is creating one.

Everything that comes after it depends on getting that first step right.

This is solid Ash. Coming it at:
📏 42” wide × 135” long × 2.5” thick! (Exactly 3.75 Rhett’s!)

🌱 How long does it take for a tree to grow this large?

While every tree grows differently, an ash tree capable of producing a slab like this likely spent 80 to well over 100 years reaching this size.

When this tree first started growing…

🌱 Franklin D. Roosevelt hadn’t even become president yet.
📺 Most families didn’t own a television.
🎸 Rock ‘n’ roll didn’t exist.
🚗 Seat belts weren’t standard in cars.
🌎 World War II hadn’t happened yet.
💻 The internet, cell phones, and social media were science fiction.

🩸 African Bloodwood — The Tree That Bleeds

This is one of the wildest woods we’ve had in the shop.

African Bloodwood, also known as Pterocarpus angolensis, gets its name from the deep red sap it releases when freshly cut. At first, the fresh cut can look lighter, but as the sap and exposed wood react with air, it begins to oxidize, deepening into that rich red tone Bloodwood is known for.

That natural red color isn’t stain. It isn’t dye. It’s the wood itself.

African Bloodwood is dense, durable, and absolutely stunning once finished. It’s the kind of material that reminds you woodworking is more than just building — it’s working with something that has a story before it ever reaches the shop.

My name is David Leib and I am behind the concept of,

A Cut Above Custom Woodwork.

It all started with the need for dining room chairs. After hours of searching the internet and visiting the usual big-named box stores, I decided I would try my hand at building a chair myself. Ever since then, I've been creating and crafting in Rock Island, Illinois.

Our first Brick-and-Mortar was Established in 2023 in Moline, IL.

A Cut Above Custom Woodwork has been dedicated to creating unique and beautiful pieces for our customers. Our skilled craftsmen use their expertise to restore old items and create new, custom-made pieces. We have a passion for quality and style, and it shows in everything we do.
